A detective from the year 2077 finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future.
Un gruppo di ribelli, condannati alla pena di morte per atti di terrorismo, fugge dalla propria esecuzione viaggiando indietro nel tempo dall'anno 2077 fino al 2012; Kiera Cameron, un Protettore (agente di polizia di una Vancouver del futuro) è involontariamente trasportata insieme ai ribelli indietro di 65 anni.
Con l'obiettivo di rintracciare il gruppo (chiamato "Liber8") e fermare i suoi tentativi di cambiare il passato, quindi anche il futuro, Kiera si unisce al dipartimento di polizia di Vancouver del 2012, sfruttando in segreto anche l'aiuto del giovane esperto tecnologico Alec Sadler, che le fornisce in tempo reale informazioni e contatti necessari per operare nel tempo presente nonostante la sua mancanza di credenziali ufficiali.
Quello del 2077 è un futuro distopico: la democrazia costituzionale e i governi nel mondo sono crollati; un nuovo sistema di governo di corporazioni e repubbliche aziendali domina il pianeta, istituendo un'alta sorveglianza, uno stato di polizia tecnicamente avanzato ed eliminando alcune libertà civili.
